  1. Fun question...I was about 27 and pregnant the first time and the need to make stuff for my baby took over about half my brain's fuctions and since then I never looked back. They were handmade babies!

Now, I'm not much of a sewer or doer of difficult things, but I can fill a niche to sew for kids pretty easily. Sew for a man? I'm stumped!

  2. I started sewing on my mother's machine when I was quite young, and doing handwork before then. Maybe 10, maybe earlier. It's hard to remember. I wanted to immitate my mother and I think my first hand-sewing efforts were clothes either for one of my teddy bears or one of my Barbies.

  4. I would love to win this bundle - I want to do a scrappy low-volume quilt and this would be a nice start!
I remember sewing a Bicentennial quilt (1976) when I was in the fourth grade. It seems like that is all I did at school for a llllooooonnnnngggg time, and I took a pretty long hiatus after that :-)

  5. I've been sewing for as long as I can remember..my mom insisted that we not have "idle hands"...so we always had to be doing some sort of craft when watching television. Even my brothers drew their own needlepoint and latch hook canvases. They made some pretty cool baseball player needlepoint pictures. Us girls were always doing cross stitch, sewing, knitting, crocheting or latch hook...its just stuck with me all these years and my hands are still always busy...I would love to have this bundle to make another "whites & lights" quilt!

  6. I first started sewing when I was 4 with my grandmother making clothes for my dolls. I don't think I was actually sewing I think I just put the fabrics together and when I got distracted she sewed them for me! Thanks for the chance to win!

  7. I have to say much the same as Nati, I had dolls but in those days they came with minimal clothes and I learnt to sew and knit so that I could dress them. As far as I can remember my granny drew a rough pattern on paper an it was up to me to cut it out and make it fit.

  8. I started sewing 2 years back. My passion to sewing and quilting started when I'm looking for a new job in 2010. I accidentally googled a sewing blog and spent time reading it instead of applying for job. Maybe this is my destiny..

  10. I remember watching my grandmother sew and crochet when I was really little. I tried a little crochet back then but didn't start sewing until I was in high school. I took Home Ec(remember that?) but had a really awful teacher so I learned from my neighbor. I used to baby sit her kids...all 6 of them...and she taught me how to sew. Of course, she made lots of my clothes for me til I got good enough to wear what I made, but just watching her sew was a good teaching aid.

  11. I brought a Singer sewing machine and taught myself to sew in 1988. My first sewing class around 1998 and found out I really didn't know how to use my machine, tension setting is still a wonder to me.

  12. Such a pretty bundle of fabric! Santa brought my first Holly Hobby sewing machine when I was about 7. My mother, grandmothers, and all my aunts sewed, so I just thought it was what "we" were supposed to do. However I really didn't start sewing till I was in my twenties. Making curtains, small quilts, halloween costumes for my kids.

  14. I started sewing almost 40 years ago when I was 12. Although I'd been doing embroidery for some time by then, I didn't actually start sewing until Home Ec class in middle school. It always interested me because my grandmother was quite the seamstress. Thank you for all the giveaway opportunities - it's been a lot of fun.

  15. I started 11 years ago. A dear friend introduced me to patchwork and I found handsewing so relaxing and lovely that I couldn't stop.

  16. I was a kid when I started sewing (maybe 8 or 10 years old?). I was visiting my grandmother for the summer and she had some leftover fabric bits and these cheap little dolls (kind of like barbies but smaller, child sized not adult sized). I made them clothes. Really UGLY clothes (the fabric was gray double knit).

  18. My quilting began 26 years ago; when I wanted a comforter re covered. My mother-in-law offered to do it for me; much bigger job than she expected. So she showed me how to hand quilt...I helped with this project. Never looked back!!

  19. After my baby girl was born April 2011, I decided to become a housewife. In the beginning of this year I bought a local crafts magazine, thinking I should start a hobby to keep myself busy. So I decided to make a quilt that was featured in that magazine, and from that moment I have not stopped... My husband clearly saw that a 'new love' was blooming, and bought me a sewing machine for my birthday. I'm oh so loving it ♥♥♥

  21. I first learned to sew in high school (seriously), made a chair slipcover and a valence, and then hardly touched a sewing machine until just this summer! I LOVE IT. I get sad when away from sewing for more than a day or two.

    Thank you!!!

  23. Hi,
I learned to sew on an old Singer treadle machine. My older sister was a great inspiration.....I was in H.S. before I sewed very much. Now my sister and I both quilt.

  24. I started sewing in high school. I wanted a bedspread with a map of the world on it and could not find any. So, I graphed out a world map using our old encyclopedia set and asked my mom to help me figure out how to make a quilt. She is an excellent semstress, but never made quilts. She showed me a simple strip piecing method to mass produce the blocks I'd need, and a few months later, tada! world quilt. I learned a lot from making that first quilt. For example, it is important to plot out your finished size. This quilt fits a twin bed width wise, but is about 3.5 feet too long. :) lesson learned.

  25. I started sewing in 1973 when my boyfriend gifted me a new Singer sewing machine with my pre-engagement pearl ring attached to the handle. I must have been impressed because 39 years later we are still together. He latter gifted me a new Kenmore sewing machine when I had my first child. I sewed all of her clothes and diapers because we were very poor back then.

  30. I was a hyperactive 3 year old and my mom did not know what to do with me. She sat me on her lap and let me play with her machine. I made a skirt all by myself when I was five and have loved sewing ever since.

  31. I grew up in the 50's, my mother made all my clothes and was a quilter, sewing was always a part of my life.

  32. I started sewing when I was 8. That means I have been sewing for a VERY long time!( almost 50 years). I was always crafty and my mother would let me use her scraps and the machine and so it just kind of happened. I still love to sew and am enjoying sewing with my granddaughter.

  33. I took the usual Home Ec class but had dabbled a little prior and my Mom was always sewing, I had all my dresses sewn by my Mom when I was little. It wasn't until I was in my early 20's that I was getting bored with the clothes available and really took up sewing. I, like my Mom, made all my clothes for quite a few years. The quilting started when my oldest was born almost 11 years ago. Back then I tied and fumbled around trying to figure it out on my own with a very crappy sewing machine. Since then I have thoroughly enjoyed the delight of creating quilts and home decor and in the new year plan to once again delve back into sewing my own wardrobe with the help of Burda!

  37. I started sewing about 60 years ago!!! At about 8, I convinced my mom that I needed to sew some clothes for my dolls. Have never looked back; I love sewing. There was a time when my children were young and I was working that I didn't do much more than mend with a small project here and there. I had not quilted until I took a beginning class about 3 years ago. It was another 6 months after that before quilting got into my blood!!

  39. My mom used to make a lot of my clothes. I then got to an age where I got picky about how my clothes were made. My mom said, "well if you don't like how I do it, you're going to learn how to do it yourself." She taught me how to make simple things. When I entered high school I took a sewing class and have been sewing off and on ever since.

  41. I started sewing in grade school, probably about 4th grade. By then I already knew how to embroider, knit, crochet and because mom taught me all those it was just natural to learn sewing next. I went on to take sewing in 7-10th grade and then again as a Senior(beautiful lined sky blue chiffon fitted dress, with silver trim that went around the neck and double down the front seam, other than front, back & side seams it was all hand stitched (zipper, sleeve inset and all hems and trims) Sorry about the trip down memory lane. that was back in '69.
