Welcome! Happy Thursday! Today is the last day of the Dare to Dresden blog hop over at Sew We Quilt. It's been so much fun seeing everyone's project over the past week while busily trying to finish my own. (Which I did, at noon on Wednesday!)
Thanks so much to the always enthusiastic and cheerful Christine from Quilt Monster in My Closet for being the hop cheerleader, and to Madame Samm for hosting all these great blog hops.
I purchased this bundle of batik fat quarters at Quilt Festival at least six years ago.
The glow of the original project I had in mind had faded. So when the Dresden hop was announced, I knew these fabrics had found their purpose!
Keep reading the novel below to learn more about how this came together.
To skip all that (I won't be offended...I know I'm long-winded!) and find the links for today's other participating blogs and to find out to enter my giveaway, scroll to the bottom.
Just wasn't feelin' it.
I tried a *few* other variations. Still nothin' I loved.
Monday night I pieced three of the quarter-circles. Then I unpieced the fourth quarter-circle that I'd pieced (badly) earlier. It's amazing what a difference a miniscule amount of error makes in a Dresden!
I pinned the completed Dresden to a square of Kona Tangerine (yum!), added backing, and quilted 1/4" on either side of the blade allowances. In the photo below, you can see the stitch lines through the center. I knew it wouldn't matter since I'd be covering it up with a center circle.
But I really liked how the light blue thread looked on the orange. So I ultimately used that look to echo quilt the background. (Love the texture this creates!) I stitched on a bias binding to cover the outside raw edges of the Dresden, and made a circle using the interfacing technique for the inner circle.
Now here's my question: Would you bind it in orange or in navy?
I couldn't decide so I haven't done it yet.
And here's my giveaway:
Leave me a comment telling me your vote: orange binding or navy?
If you're not a follower, I'd love for you to consider becoming one (and let me know in your comment!). I will randomly choose one random comment and send that person this cute little quilt I made a few weeks ago (my first Dresden attempt...read more here!) and the six fat quarters below.
The giveaway is open through Monday, February 4th at 11:59 EST.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Make sure you check out all the other blogs posting today:

Color My World --You're Here!
p.s. Linking to Confessions of a Fabric Addict's Can I get a whoop whoop Friday? and Quilt Story's Fabric Tuesday.
Wow! Your modern dresden is really cool! I love the colors and that pop of orange. It's pretty amazing you got those oranges to line up like that without measuring! As for binding, that's a tough call. I wish you had a blue and orange stripe or something....that way you could combine the two. Orange would be a cleaner look. That's how I lean, I think.
ReplyDeleteWhy not alternate the orange and the blue in the binding, to match the blades of the dresden?
ReplyDeletethis is fabulous!
I already follow you and I'd do it in orange.
ReplyDeleteCan I just say GORGEOUS! I love the colors and the modern design. I would bind it in orange.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I started to scroll down and saw your fabrics I started anticipating and thinking this will be gorgeous ... and, of course, it is! Just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI would personally choose navy ... I think ... many times I have to audition different binding colors and go back and forth and step back for a few days and then revisit to choose. Sometimes this means I am missing a third possibility and that is why I could not decide to begin with. Maybe the lighter blue?
Thanks for sharing ... :) Pat
What a spectacular dresden quilt! I don't normally like batiks much, but I really really like this quilt! I think binding in either color would be fine, but I prefer a solid navy maybe. I am a follower:) You made the most beautiful dresden on your blog hop day!
ReplyDeleteps. I love happy accidents! The story behind the quilt was interesting.
LOve you Dresden! I think I would use your background fabric so it would take away from your lovely quilt. Thank you for sharing and the great giveaway. I am a follower GFC.
ReplyDeletejbechosend at sbcglobal dot net
Oops, should have said so it would not take away from your lovely quilt! To much late night hopping. Eek, more mistakes, Love your Dresden.
DeleteI think you should use a scrapy binding with all the fabrics in the dresden. lisaursino@msn.com
ReplyDeleteI think I would bind it in navy or as the person before me says in all of the colors scraps. I am signing up tonight to follow you. Thank you for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI love your Dresden! Totally cool and modern! If you bind it in blue or scrappy, it will frame the quilt, but if you bind it in orange it would allow your Dresden to float in the tangerine, so I think the orange gets my vote! Sometimes you just don't need to have a visible frame! I am a follower...I want to find out what you are going to bind this beauty with AND I love your creativity!!
ReplyDeleteNavy would look awesome
ReplyDeleteOh it is so lovely I love it - love all of the colours you have used. I would bind it in navy - will make it really stand out then. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteoh wow I love everything about this - the colours, the design, the fabrics, just fantastic. Think I would go for navy for the binding to make a nice frame to set off the gorgeous tangerine colour.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow Batman! What a gorgeous quilt! You did an amazing job and I'm so inspired! Love the two colors, orange and blue together. Like the comments above me, orange would be a cleaner look and not stop your eye the way a blue binding would. A scrappy binding might work as well?? It's hard and can't wait to see what you decide. Thanks for sharing with us..awesome job!
ReplyDeleteThank you for a great giveaway and a chance to win. I am a new follower.

Navy binding! Can I tell you a secret? In the first picture when I saw your fabric choices I thought ho hum, but when you put them together WOW! They look great! I learned a lesson...never judge a block by the raw fabric...wait to see how it all comes together. Your work is LOVELY! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNavy without a doubt! Thanks
ReplyDeleteStunning! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI'd bind it in orange!
Thank you for sharing!
I say navy, thanks for sharing and the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI am all for navy! I have been your follower for a while now!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is wonderful! I think I would bind it in navy, or maybe even the light blue if you have it. The orange batiks are really fun. Love the practice Dresden too!
ReplyDeleteEllie...wow....this is a bullseye to my heart...great pics, colors and dresden design..ultra modern
ReplyDeleteI love your Dresden! Navy, I think is what I would do.
ReplyDeleteI would bind in navy - gives contrast and a stopping point.
ReplyDeleteI became a follower of you blog too.
Thanks, Lynn
There's something to be said about trial and error I guess because you were persistent and ended up with something beautiful. Great job. I would definitely use the navy blue as the binding.

ReplyDeleteVery nice colors! and modern design. I really liked it.
ReplyDeleteI would go for a blue binding, I think. But it's difficult.
thanks for sharing.
I am a follower and I think a navy binding would frame it nicely. It's a beautiful dresden! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty Dresden - so creative! I really like the colors you used also - I think I would bind it in navy. I'm going to start following just so I can see the finished product. :)
ReplyDeleteLove your Dresden quilt - the blues and orange are great together. I'd bind it in blue. But there's also a great faux piped binding tutorial that could work. It's at:
ReplyDeletehttp://tlcstitches.blogspot.com/2010/07/faux-piped-binding-tutorial.html
I'm a follower - receiving posts by email. Thanks for sharing & thanks for the chance to win.
I like your idea of combi i g the colors, but it will be hard to reproduce the butting of oranges! Will follow you blog
ReplyDeleteI love this dresden of yours!!
ReplyDeleteI would bind it in orange so the dresden is the star... If you add the blue I think it will take away from the middle of the quilt.....
I like the dresden and I would go with navy!
ReplyDeleteThat dresden is great! I would bind it in navy to frame it.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower. I think a blue binding would be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is just stunning - I love the glow of it. :) And I'd choose navy I think. blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteLove the Southwestern flavor of this dresden. Just lovely! I'd bind it in navy to stop the eye from going off the edge. thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI say Navy binding - the contrast will be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower &
My dream is to own a quilt & I would be perfectly happy with a mini quilt ...I love flowers & it is just darling!!!!
You did a wonderful job.
Thank you so much for joining this Blog hop :)
Definitely Navy!! Anything that beautiful deserves a frame! It is ART!
ReplyDeleteGo with navy for sure...lol. It will set the whole quilt off.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower
Casting my vote for navy! nice job! Maybe the snow will return and you cantake a photo once you have the binding completed.
ReplyDeleteI think I would go with navy. It will make the quilt shine. I don't think the orange binding would show much.
ReplyDeleteLovely! I would say NAVY! I'm a follower, too.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I'm thinking I'd bind it in orange so that it appears as if it fades away into circular oblivion! What a fun way to quilt it.
ReplyDeleteNavy and it will pop the navy in the design! This is gorgeous. I don't suppose there is any chance of a pattern as you winged it!
ReplyDeletei love the bright modern look of your Dresden, the colours are great. I'd choose the navy.
ReplyDeleteI already follow you, keep the creativity going!
I would use Navy. It will really make the dresden stand out. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought navy and then I thought that would pull the eye away from the Dresden, so I think I would bind it it the tangerine. The navy would be stunning, but I think it will pull the eye from the design.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. I love how do tell about doing it without doing the math. Love it. And I'm a math type person. Sometimes things just work out.
Your first attempt is adorable. The flange sure adds to it, too.
I considered becoming a follower and did become a follower. Thanks for participating and sharing your marvelous creativity.
How pretty, Ellie! I would say navy to frame it, but you might consider the light blue if the navy is too much. Lay it out on each and see it from a distance. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI'm amased at how nice the orange went with the blues.i will have to give that a try . I pick Navy for the binding
ReplyDeleteYou have made a wonderful Dresden quilt and married the orange and navy to be a lucky union.
ReplyDeleteI think Navy binding will be amazing. And you mug rag is wonderful
Thanks for sharing
I love batiks and this is beautiful. I would do navy. It will really make the quilt pop. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI think navy would be a great compliment to the orange and put the perfect finishing touch on your quilt. Just love bright colors!
ReplyDeleteYour dresden is beautiful. I would bind it in navy.
ReplyDeleteLove that Dresden and navy would my choice for binding.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I would bind it in navy! Thanks for your inspiration!

ReplyDeleteI like it! I think(and so does everyone else)that the Navy binding will be great. And of course I am a follower.
ReplyDeleteI agree with every one else...Navy binding for a frame. Very nice job
ReplyDeleteBlessings
Gmama Jane
I like the navy binding. I love your mug rug! So cute. Thanks for being part of the hop and I am a follower.
ReplyDeleteI love your Dresden! The colors are wonderful. Navy or orange binding? Well I would lay a strip of each on the side of the quilt and stand back and squint at it and see which looked the best to me. If you chose orange it would look the way it looks right now which is beautiful. Navy would just define the outer edge and frame it more. So if you want it to have a a little frame, then choose navy, if not go with orange, Either way it would be gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI would bind with navy. thanks for sharing your story. I became a new follower.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt and particularly like the way you quilted it. It may have been a happy accident, but I sure wish you would write a pattern for us. As for the binding, that's a tough call. I'm leaning toward the orange, but a lot depends on where you will use it. Either would look great.
ReplyDeleteI think it needs a striped binding! I love it! So fun and full of energy!
ReplyDeleteOh my I absolutely love your project. I adore the color combination you used. I really do think the navy binding will look awesome on it...it will such a contrast and tie it all together with the existing blues in the project. ANd tha tlilte dresedan project will b ea awesome win for whomever wins the giveaway. I am a very new quilter and I do lots abnd lots of haveing to rip out and redo..and I hate every moment of ripping out might I add... conn_and_vans_mom(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I say navy.
ReplyDeleteWow! and Wow! Really, this is fabulous. I like navy for the binding :)
ReplyDeleteYou made a great dresden. Navy binding I think.
ReplyDeleteNAVY - it would really make it POP! Such a wonderful project
ReplyDeleteWOW! Your quilt is amazing. And the quilting-my goodness. How awesome! It is sooo pretty.
ReplyDeleteI think I would use the navy for the binding .(BTW. The colors are the same colors as my grandsons' school colors. He would LOVE this.
Thank you for sharing and for the great giveaway. I am a new follower.
The quilt is awesome!!! I would use the navy to bind it so it frames it:)
ReplyDeleteNavy would be my choice for binding. What a beautiful quilt. I love how your have pieced the blades.
ReplyDeleteYou spent a lot of time on that beauty! I LOVE IT! Your giveaway is so generous and BEAUTIFUL!!!! I am in awe of quilters like yourself that spend so much time, but your quilts look like they were sooo easy...Very loveley indeed!
ReplyDeleteI am DEFINITELY a new follower!
ReplyDeleteyour block is stunning! Wow, I love it so much. I'd bind it in navy.
ReplyDeleteWow, it's absolutelly fabulous! I would go with orange, so as not to distract from the amazing pattern. Love it!
ReplyDeleteYour "dumb luck" certainly produced a beautiful Dresden..love it! Your giveaway Dresden is so cool--I'll be checking it out, too. :O)
ReplyDeleteI would bind it in Navy, that would draw your eyes to the very center of the Dresden like your falling into the center hole.
ReplyDeleteGreat Giveaway!
I would go with navy for the binding. I like the litte quilt you have as a part of your giveaway. I am a follower. Thanks. vickise at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI just started following you. I would bind it in blue. Very nice quilt. :)
ReplyDeleteI am thinking navy. Your dresden is very modern looking and congrats on being a winner.
ReplyDeleteThe navy binding would be my choice - love the modern twist!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quit, the colors just dance. Karin
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I would go with orange binding so as not to take away from the visual impact of your dresden. Really lovely job!
ReplyDeleteLovely, lovely! Definitely navy and preferable one of the ones that has more "texture" (print).
ReplyDeleteI think and orange binding (or even an orange facing) would give a more modern look which is what you said you are going for. The quilt is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOne word, STUNNING!!!! I would use navy as it would frame it.
ReplyDeleteI'd say bind it in orange. The orange background is already framing the plate. I don't think I'd want to be distracted by a contrasting binding.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog!
I would use Navy to boarder - just a thin one to give it a nice frame and draw the eye in towards the center. Great work!
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower :) LOVE the modern spin. How about a navy stripe?
ReplyDeletegreat dresden. I agree with the others, bind it in orange to make the dresden pop out
ReplyDeleteStunning!
ReplyDeleteI vote navy. (I'm new to quilting so really only go by gut feeling....)
Congrats on being one of the chosen!
Love your dresden, it's really neat! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteCo brats on a top choice pick. Love it. Thnx!
ReplyDeleteI am a happy regular follower of your blog! I love the concentric circles around the outside of the Dresden!
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunner! I continue to be impressed by all that you blog hoppers produce. I vote for the Navy blue binding.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using bias binding around the outside of the Dresden circle. I've just been learning so much and getting so many good ideas from bloggers like you who have shared their talents with us. Thanks for sharing! And I would bind the outside in the navy blue, simply because I personally prefer contrasting bindings.
ReplyDeleteI love the tangerine, that is one gorgeous and bright color. I think I'd use the navy for the binding. I'd be afraid of the binding blending in with the quilt, and I like a good, solid frame to my quilts. But that's just me.
ReplyDeleteGood job! I love your "happy accident" quilt! :)
No matter how it happened, it is a work of art! You did a fabulous job on all of it.
ReplyDeleteI think the navy binding would look great! I like to see contrast.
I love the way it turned out. It is beautiful. I would use either a combination of the two or navy. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNavy for sure! This is such a fabulous quilt, the orange has so much strength and the navy would be the perfect balance (in my humble opinion) :)
ReplyDeleteOf course I'm a follower, your blog is fantastic.
Thank you for the chance :)
It's absolutely gorgeous! I love the colour combinations (contrasts). I would do the binding in navy.
ReplyDelete:o)

I love reading novels, I might what to try out your technic myself. I would think that a navy binding would work great on your Dresden. I am already a follower.
ReplyDeleteLove your dresden creation!! The binding should definitely be navy!! Thanks for sharing in the blog hop!!
ReplyDeleteI would do blue especially blue with white polka dots!
ReplyDeleteI would do blue.
ReplyDeleteYour modern dresden is absolutely beautiful.I`d love blue.I`m a follower!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely NAVY!
ReplyDeleteI love how your Dresden turned out. I think I would bind it in navy . I am a follower.
ReplyDeleteI would go with navy. Either way it is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there is no snow. I think that brown background really make your quilt pop! I vote for a navy binding. Great art should be framed. Beautiful! Congrats on the top choice. I am now a follower/
ReplyDeleteGlorious dresden! The colours are so lively and fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower. Love your colors and the way you used them. I always go for contrast so I think I would use the navy for binding. Wow...your Dresden giveaway prize is awesome. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteRosemary B here: This is really pretty. I love happy accidents, that is pretty much life isn't it... most of the time anyway.
ReplyDeleteYour dresden is just marvelous.
I think you shouldbind it in orange... or I am thinking one of those lighter blues would look attractive. I love those lighter blues you have in there and if you did the binding in one of those, it might make a happy surprise by bringing out those colors that are hiding.
Anyway, it is gorgeous.
It has been warm and freezing and raining and snowy here crazy weather this winter...
thank you for sharing today!
oh, and I am following :-) via Pierro's bloggie
Hi!!! I love it!!! Great happy accidents!!! It is very pretty!!! I also like the lighter blue!!! But the navy will be very pretty too!! I love the give away dresden too!!! Very pretty!!! I am a happy follower!!! Thanks for the fun!!!
ReplyDeleteI prefer navy for the border. What a lovely Dresden quilt.

Love your beautiful very modern dresden. I think i would prefer the navy binding but you will love it no matter what.
ReplyDeleteI would use the navy. I think it will "hem" the orange in, so to speak!
ReplyDeleteI am a follower already! Nice work with the dresden plate. You design is so creative.
ReplyDeleteI would use the navy to frame the throw nicely. I love the fact that your two dresdens are so different!
ReplyDeleteits gorgeous... I personally would go with Navy.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower as well
ReplyDeleteEllie your Dresden is stunning and I think I would bind it in the orage so as not to take away from the drama of the Dresden!!! I loveeeeeeeeeeeee your little graffiti Dresden!! So clever!! And I am so happy to see you young gals carrying on this fabric art form - the quilt!!
ReplyDelete(following!)
ReplyDeleteSometimes, the whim sure turns out wonderfully, doesn't it? You Dresden is gorgeous - and I would most definitely bind in Navy - I've started binding a lot of my quilts with dark solids, and man, do I ever get nice complements about them!
Thanks for sharing your masterpiece with us today!
I love your Dresden! Your colors are great--they just pop drawing your eye around the circle and towards the center. I would go navy. I am a new follower.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. You deserved to be in the top 2 today. I would go with the orange. Great job.
ReplyDeleteGreat project! That dresden is amazing - I love it's size and the way the strips lined up. Perhaps your subconscious was working it's creative way through into the strips so that the oranges lined up so well??!! I love the circle quilting you did - it looks amazingly perfectly spaced. How did you manage? I think I would use orange for the binding; I think the navy might detract from the rest of the quilt.
ReplyDeleteYour Dresden is out of this world! The colors are fantastic. Hmmmm, which binding? I think I would use orange. No matter which binding you choose, it will still be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm already a follower.
It truly amazes me the beauty of your dresden. I would choose a dark blue binding. How thrilled I am that I stopped by, reading your post has really inspired me to just let go and try something different. Thank you for sharing! Thank you for inspiring me!
ReplyDeleteI loooove your Dresden.....it is amazing....just gorgeous!! You did such a nice job getting to where you wanted. I would bind it in navy myself....just think it would set it off...lotsa snap! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm already a Follower of your Blog. Thanks for chance to win one of your created treasures too...am so excited!! :)
Love this Dresden Sew Very Much.. I would say Navy..to set off the blades. Hugs on a wonderful Dare project! I am late night hopping after a long day at work :( but what a Joy it is to see all the wonderful dresdens! Thank you for participating in the HOP!
ReplyDeleteLove your version of the dresden! And the colors are glorious! I would use the navy binding to finish this great little quilt off with.
ReplyDeleteI love your modern dresden! I'm into the whole modern thing, too! I would bind it in navy. I think that will give it a nice finish :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome dresden! I love it and the quilting is fantastic. I would bind it in navy! I'm following too! Thanks for participating and inspiring us!!
ReplyDeleteI love your "accident". So very bright and cheery. I'd bind it in navy. I am now a facebook follower so i can come back and visit often.
ReplyDeleteWould have to go with the navy. Love the modern look! Signed up for your email list. Looking forward to future posts.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely go with the navy! I'm already a follower! :)
ReplyDeleteI think I would go with the orange so the Dresden could stand out. that is a beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteI would vote for the navy. Thank you for sharing with us!
ReplyDeleteWow, stunning!!!.. orange appeals for the border initially but would you consider a combo of orange and navy in short sections to provide a "dashing" finish reflecting your stimulating dresden? :)grace(at)amnet(dot)net(dot)au
ReplyDeleteNavy would give the eye a starting and stopping point. It would also draw the eye to he navy in your blades. I love your modern Dresden.
ReplyDeleteI would bind it in navy to give it a nice frame. =)
ReplyDeleteYou happy accident is truly beautiful. I love how you quilted this one, too!
It has to be navy. I will set it off perfectly.
ReplyDeletetvbart@charter.net
Wow, and wow! Outstanding! I'm just a beginner but I think your medium blue fabric might work for the binding. It would make a softer outer frame and allows the navy blue to remain as an outline for the beautiful circle. Lay it out next to your light blue fabric as well - you never know it will hit you! I think whatever you do with this design will work.
ReplyDeleteI think Navy would look great.
ReplyDeleteI would bind in navy. Lovely quilt.
ReplyDeleteI vote for Navy. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI would bind it in orange so that the binding does not draw attention away from your amazing Dresden. It looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, fabulous quilting.
ReplyDeleteI would add a blue piping and orange binding.....
I do follow you blog now glad to bee here ☺
Liebe Grüße
Bente
I'd bind it in orange--it feels more modern to me and better for your beautiful quilt. I'm already a follower, too.
ReplyDeleteI would bind in navy because the center Dresden is bound in navy giving continuity to the project. Its a great design and looks very modern. One would never guess that you started out with a Dresden Plate. tkmattson@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteNavy!! It would frame your quilt beautifully! Love it.
ReplyDeleteBetty G.
I have never been a big fan of batiks but you have made them look fabulous. I would prefer an orange binding so that the eye is drawn to the beautiful dresden.
ReplyDeleteWow! Very clever. Lots of creativity here! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWow what a beauty. Nice combination the colors and fabrics-
ReplyDeleteWhoop whoop! That's one cool dresden block!!
ReplyDeleteHey Ellie, I think that quilt most definetly is about the center. It's like a bulls eye. The tangerine is just there to contrast and frame. Using the dark fab for binding would only draw your eye away from the main attraction while finishing with the matching tangerine would keep your attention focused on the center. It's quite beautiful and I enjoyed reading about your process and I really liked the way you quilted it! cheers, Claire W.
ReplyDeleteYou did an awesome job. Either colour works well for a binding. Maybe you need to audition them both and then choose your favorite.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! I love the way the colors move around on the Dresden!
ReplyDeleteI would go with navy to make everything pop!
So I'm really late in visiting you for the Dresden hop...your quilt is stunning! I love it!
ReplyDelete
