Dare to Dresden

Welcome! Happy Thursday! Today is the last day of the Dare to Dresden blog hop over at Sew We Quilt. It's been so much fun seeing everyone's project over the past week while busily trying to finish my own. (Which I did, at noon on Wednesday!)
Thanks so much to the always enthusiastic and cheerful Christine from Quilt Monster in My Closet for being the hop cheerleader, and to Madame Samm for hosting all these great blog hops.

I purchased this bundle of batik fat quarters at Quilt Festival at least six years ago.

The glow of the original project I had in mind had faded. So when the Dresden hop was announced, I knew these fabrics had found their purpose!

Keep reading the novel below to learn more about how this came together.
To skip all that (I won't be offended...I know I'm long-winded!) and find the links for today's other participating blogs and to find out to enter my giveaway, scroll to the bottom.

I didn't start with that exact idea. I knew I wanted to make a more modern Dresden. I start piecing strip sets, and cut blades from those as well as from plain fabric. Here was one of my first attempts.
Just wasn't feelin' it.

I tried a *few* other variations. Still nothin' I loved.

Ultimately, I came up with what you see here. Some of it was dumb luck. Like the fact that the orange sections butt up against each other in both areas. I just cut widths to make a strip set without doing math. What are the chances?! It's a happy accident that I like.

Monday night I pieced three of the quarter-circles. Then I unpieced the fourth quarter-circle that I'd pieced (badly) earlier. It's amazing what a difference a miniscule amount of error makes in a Dresden!

I pinned the completed Dresden to a square of Kona Tangerine (yum!), added backing, and quilted 1/4" on either side of the blade allowances. In the photo below, you can see the stitch lines through the center. I knew it wouldn't matter since I'd be covering it up with a center circle.
But I really liked how the light blue thread looked on the orange. So I ultimately used that look to echo quilt the background. (Love the texture this creates!) I stitched on a bias binding to cover the outside raw edges of the Dresden, and made a circle using the interfacing technique for the inner circle.

If I'd finished this quilt three days earlier or two days later, you'd see pristine white snow in the background. But it's been 50 degrees the last two days and all you see are brown leaves and mud. Good thing my quilt is so bright that the background scenery faces away!

Now here's my question: Would you bind it in orange or in navy?
I couldn't decide so I haven't done it yet.

And here's my giveaway:
Leave me a comment telling me your vote: orange binding or navy?

If you're not a follower, I'd love for you to consider becoming one (and let me know in your comment!). I will randomly choose one random comment and send that person this cute little quilt I made a few weeks ago (my first Dresden attempt...read more here!) and the six fat quarters below.

The giveaway is open through Monday, February 4th at 11:59 EST.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Make sure you check out all the other blogs posting today:

  1. Wow! Your modern dresden is really cool! I love the colors and that pop of orange. It's pretty amazing you got those oranges to line up like that without measuring! As for binding, that's a tough call. I wish you had a blue and orange stripe or something....that way you could combine the two. Orange would be a cleaner look. That's how I lean, I think.

  2. Why not alternate the orange and the blue in the binding, to match the blades of the dresden?

    this is fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I already follow you and I'd do it in orange.

  4. Can I just say GORGEOUS! I love the colors and the modern design. I would bind it in orange.

  5. As soon as I started to scroll down and saw your fabrics I started anticipating and thinking this will be gorgeous ... and, of course, it is! Just beautiful!

I would personally choose navy ... I think ... many times I have to audition different binding colors and go back and forth and step back for a few days and then revisit to choose. Sometimes this means I am missing a third possibility and that is why I could not decide to begin with. Maybe the lighter blue?

Thanks for sharing ... :) Pat

  6. What a spectacular dresden quilt! I don't normally like batiks much, but I really really like this quilt! I think binding in either color would be fine, but I prefer a solid navy maybe. I am a follower:) You made the most beautiful dresden on your blog hop day!
ps. I love happy accidents! The story behind the quilt was interesting.

  9. I think I would bind it in navy or as the person before me says in all of the colors scraps. I am signing up tonight to follow you. Thank you for the chance to win.

  10. I love your Dresden! Totally cool and modern! If you bind it in blue or scrappy, it will frame the quilt, but if you bind it in orange it would allow your Dresden to float in the tangerine, so I think the orange gets my vote! Sometimes you just don't need to have a visible frame! I am a follower...I want to find out what you are going to bind this beauty with AND I love your creativity!!

  11. Oh it is so lovely I love it - love all of the colours you have used. I would bind it in navy - will make it really stand out then. Thanks for sharing.

  12. oh wow I love everything about this - the colours, the design, the fabrics, just fantastic. Think I would go for navy for the binding to make a nice frame to set off the gorgeous tangerine colour.

  13. Holy cow Batman! What a gorgeous quilt! You did an amazing job and I'm so inspired! Love the two colors, orange and blue together. Like the comments above me, orange would be a cleaner look and not stop your eye the way a blue binding would. A scrappy binding might work as well?? It's hard and can't wait to see what you decide. Thanks for sharing with us..awesome job!

Thank you for a great giveaway and a chance to win. I am a new follower.

  45. At first I thought navy and then I thought that would pull the eye away from the Dresden, so I think I would bind it it the tangerine. The navy would be stunning, but I think it will pull the eye from the design.

This is amazing. I love how do tell about doing it without doing the math. Love it. And I'm a math type person. Sometimes things just work out.

Your first attempt is adorable. The flange sure adds to it, too.

I considered becoming a follower and did become a follower. Thanks for participating and sharing your marvelous creativity.

  46. How pretty, Ellie! I would say navy to frame it, but you might consider the light blue if the navy is too much. Lay it out on each and see it from a distance. Great job!

  58. I like the navy binding. I love your mug rug! So cute. Thanks for being part of the hop and I am a follower.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love your Dresden! The colors are wonderful. Navy or orange binding? Well I would lay a strip of each on the side of the quilt and stand back and squint at it and see which looked the best to me. If you chose orange it would look the way it looks right now which is beautiful. Navy would just define the outer edge and frame it more. So if you want it to have a a little frame, then choose navy, if not go with orange, Either way it would be gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I would bind with navy. thanks for sharing your story. I became a new follower.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I love your quilt and particularly like the way you quilted it. It may have been a happy accident, but I sure wish you would write a pattern for us. As for the binding, that's a tough call. I'm leaning toward the orange, but a lot depends on where you will use it. Either would look great.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think it needs a striped binding! I love it! So fun and full of energy!

  82. Lovely, lovely! Definitely navy and preferable one of the ones that has more "texture" (print).

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think and orange binding (or even an orange facing) would give a more modern look which is what you said you are going for. The quilt is wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  84. One word, STUNNING!!!! I would use navy as it would frame it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'd say bind it in orange. The orange background is already framing the plate. I don't think I'd want to be distracted by a contrasting binding.

    I follow your blog!

  94. I love the idea of using bias binding around the outside of the Dresden circle. I've just been learning so much and getting so many good ideas from bloggers like you who have shared their talents with us. Thanks for sharing! And I would bind the outside in the navy blue, simply because I personally prefer contrasting bindings.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I love the tangerine, that is one gorgeous and bright color. I think I'd use the navy for the binding. I'd be afraid of the binding blending in with the quilt, and I like a good, solid frame to my quilts. But that's just me.

Good job! I love your "happy accident" quilt! :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. No matter how it happened, it is a work of art! You did a fabulous job on all of it.

    Anyway, it is gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Great project! That dresden is amazing - I love it's size and the way the strips lined up. Perhaps your subconscious was working it's creative way through into the strips so that the oranges lined up so well??!! I love the circle quilting you did - it looks amazingly perfectly spaced. How did you manage? I think I would use orange for the binding; I think the navy might detract from the rest of the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Your Dresden is out of this world! The colors are fantastic. Hmmmm, which binding? I think I would use orange. No matter which binding you choose, it will still be beautiful.

  138. Wow, and wow! Outstanding! I'm just a beginner but I think your medium blue fabric might work for the binding. It would make a softer outer frame and allows the navy blue to remain as an outline for the beautiful circle. Lay it out next to your light blue fabric as well - you never know it will hit you! I think whatever you do with this design will work.

  141. I would bind it in orange so that the binding does not draw attention away from your amazing Dresden. It looks wonderful!

  143. I'd bind it in orange--it feels more modern to me and better for your beautiful quilt. I'm already a follower, too.

  144. I would bind in navy because the center Dresden is bound in navy giving continuity to the project. Its a great design and looks very modern. One would never guess that you started out with a Dresden Plate. tkmattson@hotmail.com

  146. I have never been a big fan of batiks but you have made them look fabulous. I would prefer an orange binding so that the eye is drawn to the beautiful dresden.

  150. Hey Ellie, I think that quilt most definetly is about the center. It's like a bulls eye. The tangerine is just there to contrast and frame. Using the dark fab for binding would only draw your eye away from the main attraction while finishing with the matching tangerine would keep your attention focused on the center. It's quite beautiful and I enjoyed reading about your process and I really liked the way you quilted it! cheers, Claire W.

  151. You did an awesome job. Either colour works well for a binding. Maybe you need to audition them both and then choose your favorite.
