Today I'm part of the "Let's Twist to the 60s with Batiks" blog hop. I'm always happy to jump on the batik bandwagon--I love the colors, the richness, and the patterns of these dyed fabrics!
I've had the idea for this quilt for a while so the lure of batiks meant that this hop seemed like a great opportunity to try it out. I pulled out my brightest batiks, cut them into strips of various widths, and started piecing strip sets...
I joined pieced strips until I had sections that measured about 20" high.
Then I used a curved ruler (the Leaves Galore Applique Template from Sue Pelland Designs) and started cutting.
I originally planned to piece the curves together, but (shhh!) I got lazy at the last minute. I cut half of the strip sections into curves and simply layered them on top of the remaining sections.
A little wavy line quilting and voila! Batiks that curve (and twist?)!
I can't end without thanking Madame Samm of Sew We Quilt and Mary of I Piece 2 Mary for being this hop's cheerleaders. And don't forget to visit today's other bloggers:
Color My World - you're here!
As a thank you for stopping by during the blog hop, I'm offering a giveaway from my batik stash (pieces are approximately fat eighths in size). To enter to win, leave a comment telling me your favorite 60s song. (Feel free to sign up to follow my blog, as well!) Mine would definitely be either a Beach Boys or Jan and Dean song--I may not have been born yet in the 60s, but I grew up listening to that music with my dad! The giveaway is open through Sunday, October 6th at 11:59 EST. On Monday, I'll choose a winner through random generator and post the name here on my blog. Good luck1
Love your curvy quilt! I really didn't have a favorite song of the 60's, strange I know, but was into classic music, lol!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite song of the 60's was Cherry Hill Park. That was when I was 9 and I don't think I really got the whole gist of the song...I just liked the tune! :)
ReplyDeleteYour curves look great...Wait.... that sounded wrong somehow! You curvy quilt looks amazing! That sounded better. I love it. Now for your question... favourite song from the 60's. Can't answer that one. Depends on the mood and the day. There are so many amazing songs from that time. Beatles, Stones, mama's and papa's....I could go on (and on and on and on). I can't choose just ONE!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt - I love the curves!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite song from the 60's? That's hard since I was a teen during the last half of that decade! I'm going to say "I Think I Love You" because it was while that song was on the car radio that my husband (then boyfriend) first told me he loved me!
I love most of the music from the 60's but my fave record of that time, and the first single I ever bought was "At The Hop" by Danny & the Juniors The beat ans the lyrics were spot on and I ended up buying it 3 times as it wore out. Love the curvy quilt, I may have to try that out.
ReplyDeleteI love those curves! Who could pick a favorite song from that time...how about It's My Party and I'll Cry if I want to. There was so much drama in my teenage life, or I thought there was, so that one spoke to me. :) blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the way you added the curves to your crazy quilt. It really turned out great!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt, the curves are great. So many great songs in the 60's and to just pick one song and one artist. Take Another Piece of My Heart sung by Janis Joplin.

ReplyDeleteI really rocked to a lot of 60's tunes. I was into the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Beach Boys, etc. But the song "Hair" from the musical Hair popped into my head along this blog hop, so if you need a song I'll pick that one today. Tomorrow I might like something else. I liked nearly all the 60's music.
I had to do a quick internet to make sure my songs were from the 60's since I was born in 1970 and don't have first hand knowledge, hahahahaha.
ReplyDeleteMy parents were teenagers in the 60's so I grew up with them playing music that they loved from their teen years. A few of my favorites are:
Baby Love
Chain of Fools
Georgia on my Mind
I Heard it Through the Grapevine
The Dock of the Bay
Wow! All of those songs take me back to my childhood.
Ellie-Your quilt is reminiscent of psychedelic posters of the 60's. I can't pick a favorite group or song as there were so many "greats" I still have all my albums that contain "Golden Oldies"Oh, how about "Thanks for the memories"-kinda says it all as Frank would've sang!

Such great music during the 60's--it was an interesting time to be a teenager.
